Hortense Soichet and Benjamin Pradel introduce you to 7 ideal-types of homes, reflecting the different bonds people form with their homes through their experience of absence. They are home-types in the sense that they don’t exist as actual homes and won’t be found anywhere empirically. The method is loosely based on Max Weber's notion of “ideal type” which is a way of understanding the meaning that individuals give to their lived experiences (Paugam, 2014). Here, the lived experience is domestic absence.

Sociologist Khadidja Boussaïd and photographer Khadidja Markemal set out to meet the women of Algiers. They investigated their strategies for moving through the capital's public space, navigating the fine line between respect for traditional rules and emancipation. The young photographer Benjamin Cayzac traveled the roads of France aboard the “Macron buses,” this new transport service established by the Macron law of 2015. We discover the experience of travelling on these buses, on journeys which are often long, not always comfortable, but full of encounters and offering a perfect opportunity to slow down and refocus on oneself. At the end of the exhibition, discover the guided tours offered by Benjamin Cayzac and urban planner Léa Lambert.

Since 2015, Ai Weiwei has been conducting a large-scale project to document the situation of refugees. It was in this context that the Forum asked him to pay particular attention to the way they use their smartphones and how this conditions their mobility. Discover Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's photos and videos, as well as an analysis by the mobility sociologist Mimi Sheller. On the occasion of the project's second highlight, we propose two interviews with Ai Weiwei that help us better understand what's at stake.

Indian photographer Ishan Tankha has twice ridden alongside travellers on the railway line linking Mumbai, one of the planet's most populated megacities, and the coastal regions of Konkan. A photographic journey that highlights the intense movement of people, forms of habitat and beliefs between Mumbai and the other cities and villages of the Konkan region, challenging the notion of irreversible mobility from the countryside towards cities.

For one month in late 2015, at Ermont-Eaubonne railway station in Ile-de-France, travelers became part of a surprising experiment: an installation composed of hourglasses that reacted to their movements, inviting travelers to take a break in their daily commute to consider the acceleration of daily life. A look at Texel, an experimental project at the crossroads of interactive art and the humanities, conducted in partnership with EnsadLab, the research laboratory of the Ecole nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs.

Artist Swann Thommen recorded the sounds of a typical day for six inhabitants of Zurich and Geneva living in downtown or peri-urban areas. He also equipped with a GPS system in order to track their movements. From this were born six six-minute montages, as well as a set of maps, charts and diagrams that visually and acoustically reveal a variety of mobile lifestyles.
